Matt Lauer Debates Ann Coulter, Loses

There are two reason Lauer lost the debate with Coulter over her stomach-churning statement about the 9/11 widows. First, as I argued recently, the mere granting of a platform to someone as obviously disturbed as Coulter is already a stain on the media outlet:
"When Coulter is invited to spout her putrescence on Larry King Live, the legitimacy granted to her is CNN's fault, not Coulter's. After all, there's no shortage of desperate attention seekers willing to say and do outlandish things to get noticed. The question is, why does CNN grant an open forum to this particular whack-job and not others?"
Second, Lauer failed to stay focused on Coulter's words: "I have never seen people enjoying their husbands’ death so much." Lauer should have said the following:
"There are two possible explanations for your statement. Either you believe it, in which case you're deranged. You don't believe it but said it for shock value, in which case you don't belong within a thousand miles of this network. Choose one."

Ann Coulter is sick, sick, sick. I doubt that she has ever been married - who would want that lunatic as a mate? Ms. Coulter - what goes around, comes around! Why don't you join the human race?

I would love to meet Ann the man Coulter on a street corner in nyc any day of the week. I know for a fact that in public, without her security guards, she wouldn't get away with her attack on the 911 families, who lost so much on that horrible day. I didn't lose my husband on 911 but i did lose a couple of friends of our family. I also lost all respect and trust i had for this nation to keep my family and friends safe. I think Ann has lost what little was left of her mind. I would take great pleasure in taking that little twit to the house of my neighbor who lost her son on 911. Her son sound-proofed the basement so he wouldn't bother the neighbors when he played his music. I think we can test just how sound-proof it really is.

Pay attention...I think I love her.
What she is saying strikes home with alot of people in this nation.

We all grieve for the losses incurred on 9/11. It affected the nation, not just NY. How much did the victims get in donations from across this country? WE CARE! If you really cared about the widows you would find out what happened to the Millions of dollars sent to NY by citizens and the BILLIONS of dollars in fedral funds that cannot be accounted for to this day.

As for Marriage between one man and one woman, you better believe the majority of citizens support this amendment and have voted overwhelmingly to support this constitutional amendment in state elections across this country.

Hey anonymous --

What the heck are you talking about? What unaccounted-for billions? And what does this have to do with the people left widowed by the attacks on the World Trade Center?

You seem to be recycling some right-wing talking points in an attempt to turn this thread addressing Ann Coulter's comments into a general attack on New York City and ... then ... gay marriage?

Total non sequitur, dude. Your thinking appears to have gotten warped somehow. You need to stop listening to so much talk radio, and give your logical processes a chance to recover.

Disagree strongly: to dispel hate-mongers like Coulter you have to turn over a few rocks. It's a fact that Coulter gets lots of winger airtime, and a serious airing of her hate literature on PBS isn't going to effectively counter her bile. Do you seriously think that she and all her allied demons will simply disappear if they aren't displayed in the MSM? Wrong.

Somebody's been making the point that Democrats and whatever represents the left in America are in need of shaking themselves awake. This latest Coulter ridiculousness only emphasises the point. Stop questioning the womans sanity and fight her on her own turf. She's just trying to sell books remember.

"Pay attention..." strikes me as the kind of lost soul who needs to be given a clear alternative to this pathetic (and sadly common) line of attack on ordinary people who are constitutionally entitled to express how they feel about their government, whether they be widowed or otherwise.

Ann Coulter likes to throw around phrases like "liberal infallibilty doctrine," as if this is a substantive concept that she will discuss using actual logic. But she doesn't... she engages in personal attacks, like questioning the sincerity of the grief felt by the 9/11 widows. She also disproves the very notion that these people (Joe Wilson, Cindy Sheehan, 9/11 widows) "can't be attacked," because she does--and she's not the only one. Right wing radio and talk shows have bashed all of the people she mentioned.

Really, the sad issue is that we don't hear from 'Katrina widows/widowers' and that the MSM hasn't completely discredited poor Miss Coulter.

Ann Coulter is a jackass, but we all know that. She is shameless and would do or say anything just to hock her latest book. She adds nothing to society, and spews her anti-liberal hatred to the point where it just becomes mundane. Does she ever say anything revolutionary or offer an alternative to liberal thinking that isn't in the GOP talking points? Nope, she just drones on and on with the same useless bullshit.

Unfortunately, this time, her target are the 9/11 widows who have been through enough. I don't know where Miss Ann is seeing non-stop coverage of these widows, because I really haven't heard much from them since the completion of the 9/11 Commission report. I don't fault any major magazine for doing a "9/11: 5 Years Later" update about these families, because I think the majority of Americans are still concerned about the victims and their families and would genuinely like to know if they are doing okay.

Maybe, like the grade school bully, if we ignore Miss Ann, she will just go away.

One of the funniest things she ever stated during an interview was that RFK was one of the first victims of "Islamic terrorism." The interviewer pointed out that Sirhan Sirhan is actually a Christian.

She seems to think that if it comes out of her mouth, it must be true (or true to those who listen to her). I've seen that same quote from Guccione - she's simply a sick woman. Colbert is shtick, Coulter is mentally ill.

Whatever your political views are, do you realize that when you launch a personal attack on Anne Coulter you make her point for her? The point she made was that anyone who dared to speak ill about a widow (i.e. Anne Coulter) would be attacked personally, and that's why the 9/11 widows are used for propaganda. Many of you lack the vision to see past that and play right into her hands. Losing a relative on 9/11, or the Iraq war doesn't make you an expert on foreign policy.

Coulter is bringing to light, in her own typical sarcastic way, what I have been wondering for years: Why do the 9/11 widows have any say in post 9/11 policy? We certainly sympathize with them but why do we have to listen to them talk politics about the future of our country at this critical point in our history? 9/11 is about the future of the USA, not about the opinions of a group of widows. You all don't get Ann. You always nitpick her "outrageous" statements she uses to bait you guys but miss the bigger picture she paints, which is usually right on the money. What she's doing in her statement about the 9/11 widows is condemning the politically correct media for propping up these women, as if their opinion means diddly squat, and woe to the one who dares refute the poor grieving widows.

But you all choose to miss the boat, calling her sick. That's great debating. I guess I'm sick too, along with half of America.

I don't think liberals are sick, just very, very wrong

It's interesting reading these comments. It seems that in the world of blogs, anyone you don't agree with is not only a hate-monger, but mentally ill, and on meth. Ms. Coulter says some very controversial (and sometimes stupid) things, but so do some Democrats (i.e. Howard Dean). Calling someone a nasty name doesn't refute their argument. If it's a bad arguement then explain why! Isn't it a bit hypocritical to say that she shouldn't be listened to because she resorts to personal attacks then call her mentally ill? I'm not asking anyone to agree with her, but for god's sake, don't dismiss her comments off hand simply because you don't like what she said.

The REAL sick, deranged, paranoid fascists are the millions of "conservatives" out there in wingnutland who buy Coulter's books, worship her bony legs and enormous Adam's apple, and actually believe the ridiculous tripe she peddles.

And REALLY evil ones are the corporate drones at NBC who are perfectly willing to let fake Nazis do their bit on camera as long as they think it might boost their ratings a little bit.

If it pleases you, buy her books; if it doesn't, write nasty things about her. Either way, she wins. As a topic, she reminds me of the brohaha concerning the "issue" of gay marriage - it's all really marginal, to most, kind of silly and certainly not anywhere near as important as the real issues facing our world. Man! It just feels like the responses here are ALL missing the point of her statement. How can there be a reasonable debate with someone who is in the widow's position? Why do you think that the widow has a superior moral position upon which to stand in discussing terrorism or what we as a country, or the Bush Administration as our government should do in response to the problem. I would suggest that the widow probably had very little knowledge in the field prior to 9-11. One of the reasons I love Ann Coulter is that she often says things that are painfully obvious, but can't be said for political reasons. Keep on going Ann!

Coulter's book Treason is a masterwork. I will read Godless with much interest. Anyone with a brain and eyes to see knows what Coulter means by the liberal infallibility doctrine--society's "victims"(i.e. women, ethnics, poor, war widows, children, etc.) are put forward as spokesmen for their grievance. Who wants to take a head shot at a grieving woman, or sincerely whining child? Reminds me of Islamic terrorists hiding among their women and children, daring our soldiers to shoot. Coulter has the balls to shoot. Thank God she, and our soldiers, do.

Republican Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Edison Misla Aldarondo was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping his daughter between the ages of 9 and 17.

Republican Party leader Paul Ingram of Thurston County, Washington pleaded guilty to six counts of raping his daughters and served 14 years in federal prison.

Republican advertising consultant Carey Lee Cramer of Arizona was charged with molesting his 9-year old step daughter after including her in an anti-Gore television commercial.

you guys miissed the forest for the trees on this one. She was referring not to the wives of husbands lost in 911, but to the wives of husbands lost on 911 and using that to make a political statement. Of course everyone feels for those lost and the loved ones lost, but how do you disagree with someone stating something on the back of a loss, with no real knowledge, stating facts? You are (apply any adjective you would like) insensitive if you question the premise of their arguement because they lost someone.

liberal policies kill the people they are working for. abortion doesn't benifit anyone in the long term and clinics have been found to have links to anti black extreamist groups (see klanparenthood.org) same with affirmative action, same with immigration etc.

If liberals keep to their word technically they'd be more apt to abort vs conservatives who generally wont. Since kids take after their parents politically just by the numbers they are losing

We also have a growing Catholic hispanic population and abortion doesn't fit in there....it also makes it a target of every other major religion...

Thank You Matt Drudge for posting this on your site! Had never heard of The Grit before and don't intend to read again. These inane comments about a conservative who appears on the left wing media that only people in those little blue islands in this wonderful red country are the stuff that comes from the East end of a horse standing West. They don't like a 52% MANDATE? What do you call 43% (Clinton 1992) or 49% (Clinton 1996)How do you think we (nascar fans, gun owners church attendees and others you stereo type as in the vast right wing conspiracy) felt? If you can't understand Ann Coulter, let alone debate her you deserve a longer trek in the wilderness of NO POLITICAL POWER in Washington stewing in your high tax blue islands of incivility.

Yes Ann can be "over-the-top" but no more so then The Other Side. It seems to take thatlevel of statement to catch the attention of the public.

Ann certainly brings out the porblems that are killing the country -> litigation at all costs as a why to make money.

To many times we listen to wacko's who only by virtue of their personal "loss" are injecting themselves into politics as some kind of expert. Widows lost their spouses that's all.

Ann is right on. Might be painful to hear but then agian, many need to wake up and deal with reality.

Ann Coulter hateful???? Some of the comments by you open-minded, progressive liberals are the very definition of hateful. Not one of you thoughtful people argued any facts. Instead, you seek to belittle the person with whom you disagree with inane personnal attacks, or by chastising the network for giving her a platform. The problem seems to be that Ann speaks her mind, whether or not it is politically correct, and most of you feel that she shouldn't be allowed to do that. Hmmmmmm.

Matt Lauer is a lightweight when it comes to debating anything of substance with the likes of Ann

He would have been better off talking about a couple issues; instead, he went too quickly in his approach and seemed to ignore

Keeping in the spirit of communication, let's bring up a hypothetical situation. What if the widows had advocated the detention of every Muslim in the nation? Would you have held the same regard for their opionions then? I think Ann wasn't angry that that they disagreed with Bush, but rather that the press validated their opinion because of the personal tragedy they suffered.

To the genius defending Coulter:

Perhaps you missed (or chose to ignore) the little F-A-C-T about her that I referenced. This woman said RFK was the first victim of "Islamic terrorism." She LIED. There's no debate - she LIED.

This is the problem with people like you. The woman LIVES on namecalling, and you act like it's merely those who disagree with your/her viewpoint that start the namecalling. I've got news for you: that's all she's worthy of - namecalling.

She is a lowlife, and continues to prove it. She loves you guys so much that she LIVES in the most "liberal" cities, yet goes to dumbf*ck, USA only when she needs to make a few shekels off of you rubes. Namecalling is universal - get use to it. The only difference is that when I do it, at least my post features an ACTUAL (and factual) example of her bullsh*t. Can you do the same?

Instead of merely giving your opinion on why we feel the way we do about her, give us a damn example of one of her F-A-C-T-S. I'm sick of generalizations. Give SPECIFICS.

Yes, I'm sure the widows are having a great time explaining to their kids why daddy will never come home. I'm sure Father's Day will be a great time for the whole family!

They (obviously) miss the love they've lost, for which we all are sympathetic, but they are blinded by their hatred for conservative ideals (like "peace through strength" or "you get what you earn"). You liberals are walking contradictions, complete hypocrites! It is okay to kill an innocent child, but don't dare think of killing a serial killer... You want "peace" and "human rights", but don't stop Saddam Hussein from funding the killing of innocent Jews in Israel or gassing his own citizens, throwing them into meat grinders or raping his own women. I read the majority of posts here and watched the interview w/ Ann. My response to the majority of posts is that they are based on emotion not fact. Many here appear to hate Ann Coulter because she dose not sugar coat her opinion. She does this for a variety of reasons that are not important to this discussion. Regardless of the delivery, her statements were all true and her form (although not appreciated) was valid. To any of you that use logic as the means to form opinion, you know the undeniable outcome; she is right. Ann coulter made Matt Lauer look like a fool on several issues including the Presidents focus on gay marriage as a re-election ploy. Mr. Lauer's arguments on the Presidents politically motivated attention to gay marriage and Ann Coulters comments on the 911 widows were obviously not thought out. The fact that he was grilling her and clearly upset at her criticism of the 911 widows, was a clear contradiction his point that they are not an infallible voice. Ann Couter needed no help maikng Mr. Lauer look stuipd. He made it there all on his own.

"liberal infallibilty doctrine" is not a throw away phrase. It's spot on. Liberals are never wrong and can't ever be challenged. And they can throw out anything they want without evidence. When the right challenges a liberal, they're accused of being racist or a bigot or a lier. Just like you're all challenging Ann. Her point on the widows was simply that the left throws them out to deliver the talking points, knowing that to challenge them is ruinous for the right.

This is not a game to "win". This is not a debate where scoring points with "gotcha" lines matters. This is the future of a nation at stake. So why don't both sides quit acting like children.

Conservatives annoy me. But liberals, you're just downright dangerous. You threw the baby of common sense out with the bathwater of bigotry and injustice back in the 60's and haven't regained it since.

Anonymous two... It appears that the liberals are restless tonight. Would someone like to debate the issue or just continue to throw stones? I wish they had put Katie Couric up with her to debate. That ultraliberal (communist loving) would have had her clock cleaned. I saw Ann in Minnesota when she gave a speech on how liberals can not debate and she made the liberals on campus look like buffoons. When they could not debate her statements on the merits, they called her names, used foul language, and finally started singing a song from the Simpsons to try and drown her out. All the while she was proving her point that liberals could not debate their way out of a paper bag. It really made me fear another liberal in the White House. Speaking of communists, how many of you liberals know that in 1996 the CIA declassified the fact that they had wire tapped and broken the code on the sub-atlantic phone line from the Kremlin to the Soviet Consulate in Washington D.C. in the 1950's? The interesting thing is that the President did not even know it, but guess who did? You did not guess it, Senator McCarthy, and it turns out that everyone he accused of being a communist spy was indeed a communist spy, but he could not prove it in the 1950's without compromising the fact that we had intercepted communications from Moscow naming the very people he later accused! Amazing how communist loving liberals don't mention that little fact when screaming McCartyism.

And today they get paid like Cindy Sheehan by special interest groups...(many with socialist/communist affiliations) Not long ago it got to where they almost hold out a tin cup, everytime they were seen on TV. Do they enjoy the $$, and media attention? They really seem to. THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!

IF what she said is true, will many of you calling her 'nuts'. What does that really make the truly ignorant out there?
What she says can be shocking and come off incensitive. But telling it like it is isn't always pleasing to the ear or acceptable to the masses.
So shut the F*** up! ;)

I love Ann Coulter's wit, and look forward to her Wednesday piece each week. To clarify for those who obviously have not noticed, she is a satirist -- an old and grand tradition in our English speaking heritage. To spell it out -- for Lauer to take her 911 widow comment literally would have been silly and would have made him (and the producer in his earphone)look weak minded. He had to match her wit -- a tall order for him or anyone else for that matter. Would your view be that Jonathan Swift really meant the Irish should eat their own children in his A Modest Proposal?

Wow, a lot of attacks on Ann Coulter for what? Daring to question the motives of family members of those who died in 9/11? Their deaths were indeed a tragedy, as are the senseless deaths that happen across the country every day, from drunk driving, crime, or what have you. The difference is that (1) the 9/11 families get million dollar settlement checks and (2) an untouchable platform from which to air their grievances about the memorial, the rebuilding at the World Trade Center site, the war in Iraq, or whatever they want. Please. Ann might ruffle some feathers by choosing an inflamatory topic, but she is dead on.

I see, so if Laur had interviewed Michael Moore, that wouldn't be a stain in NBC?

Michael Moore: “What happened to the search for Osama bin Laden?...You don't think they [the U.S. government] know where he is?”

Bob Costas (astonished): “You think they know where Osama bin Laden is and it's hands off?”

Moore: “Absolutely, absolutely.”

Costas: “Why?”

Moore: “Because he's funded by their friends in Saudi Arabia! He's back living with his sponsors, his benefactors. Do you think that Osama bin Laden planned 9-11 from a cave in Afghanistan? I can't get a cell signal from here to Queens! I mean, come on, let's get real about this. The guy has been on dialysis for two years. He's got failing kidneys....I think the United States, I think our government knows where he is and I don't think we're going to be capturing him or killing him any time soon.”

HBO's On the Record with Bob Costas - May 9, 2003

You guys are a bunch of hypocrites.

When Bush ran political ads with images from 9/11, the left cried foul:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3534533.stm

But it's A-OK to use 9/11 widows who happen to be members of the DNC get on TV and bad-mouth the president.

Hypocrites.

Coulter's statement is spot-on. Sheehan and the activist 9/11 widows should be ashamed of themselves by politicizing the deaths of their loved ones -- using their deaths for political gain.

Ann Coulter claims to speak for Christians. By a clue from the Bible, Ms. or Mr. Coulter. Jesus never walked around looking like a sex tart while spewing judgements on anyone or everyone with which He did not agree.
She is obscene in her negative, self-serving crusade. But the obscenity is only compounded by the fact that 1) she is given venue 2) she has supporters.
p.s. Any of these public figures who make their comfortable livings by destructing others give credence that ours is a doomed society. There are so many healthy, talented, gifted people who spend all their waking hours giving of themselves in constructive ways all over the world.
God help us all.

If you don't agree with someone, then just marginalize them. That is what I see with 99% of the posts in here against Ann Coulter, which certainly doesn't reflect much diversity.

I happen to agree with Ms. Coulter on many of her ideologies which you can investigate for yourself by reading her books. I like to think of her core message as self empowerment and personal responsibility, namely, you have far more power to improve your life, those around you, and ultimately the community by living by a grounded code of living. The 10 commandments are a good start, which have been tested for millenia. Government is not the solution, YOU are the solution.

Looking forward to your marginalizations of me, in the spirit of 'tolerance', I'm sure.

Let's take two potential tragedies: a family member is killed on 9-11, or a family member goes off the road in a snowstorm and is killed. Why should the 9-11 victim's family get compensated and the other's not? It is sick that these greedy people prey on the sympathies of Americans and feel that their loss is so much more important. As a person who has suffered the loss of a child, how dare you feel that your grief warrants compensation while mine does not? If anyone should be made millionaires through personal loss, it is the families of the poor servicemen who do the real dirty work. And oh yes, I would rather the government monitor my harmless telephone calls than to look warily at every suspicious person with a backpack. Coulter is abrasive, as are many voices on far right, but have you really listened to the bile coming from the far left. Really disgusting crap. You deserve Coulter!

Clinton lied to take us to war and we still have troops there.

I'm amazed how black and white every issue has become. Both sides are guilty of this. If you agree with what someone says then they are omnicient, if not they are evil idiots. There are shades of gray in everything. Ann Coulter is an extemely intelligent and thoughtful woman. Some of the ideas she spouts are done with a certain degree of vitriol that may not be necessary, however her general message is in the right direction.

Cindy Sheehan is the best example of what she is trying to say. This woman was a fruitcake but the left got behind her because they thought her to be untouchable. In the long run should prove to be a huge mistake.

PS: Matt Luaer doesn't have a chance in a debate with Ann Coulter. She has a far superior intellect to that man.

Just like all the other misguided neocons, Coulter made the assertion during the interview that the Iraq war and the "war on terrorism" are the same thing. Iraq had no WMD's and was not a hotbed of terrorism at any point before Bush and his cronies invaded. But now, after the hawkish administration unjustly invaded Iraq, it is the No. 1 locale for recruiting and breeding terrorism. Where's Bin Laden? I don't remember Saddam Hussein having anything to do with 9/11. This occupation is the No. 1 reason that the US economy has suffered under Bush and that international countries have no respect for America. Bush and Co. just revert back to the same hackneyed issues they know they can depend on when it comes election time (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) because they know that they can mobilize all the rural folks and other non-thinking individuals to the polls. Between Iraq, the CIA spy leak case, NSA wire taps, the unbelievably mismanaged, pathetic and racist response to Hurricane Katrina, gas prices, the economy, Abu Ghraib, etc. it is unbelieveable that Bush hasn't been impeached yet. Coulter - and all other right-wing pundits - are either deranged, evil or more than likely both

I have been monitoring the comments on this blog for the last hour or two. One thing I have noticed is that people from both sides have been generalizing to a staggering degree. "Lefties" are not akin to terrorists and "righties" are not all NASCAR loving gun-nuts. Saying that "republicans have very low standards" is a GROSS generalization. I don't always agree with Coulter and I sometimes agree with Al Franken, but when I DO agree with Ann that doesn't make me any less credible than when I agree with Al Franken. I think everyone here needs to go over their "logical fallacy" handbook. Ann Coulter is not "correct," he has an opinion about 9/11 widows that might deserve some more thought. She is, though, pointing out a fallacy that we cannot disagree with, or criticize someone because they have been through a very horrible tragedy.

And how come no noise about our boys fighting in Iraq for the 9/11 wives right to freedom of speech?
